Nuclear Warfare Policy: Cold War to Today: Part 8

The United States and the Soviet Union created in depth nuclear targeting doctrines which still exist today. The debate is still active today as nuclear arsenals are reduced from Cold War levels whether nuclear weapons and their infrastructure should be the target or whether the cities should be the only target. Is it time for the U.S. Navy to reconsider the supercarrier?

The aircraft carrier has been the backbone of the U.S. Navy since World War II with the aircraft carrier serving as a frontline of U.S. power projection. It has also served as a symbol of U.S. power and therefore has also served a diplomatic power on what is a U.S. priority during geopolitical upheaval. The continued cost overruns and production issues and the advances in modern warfare technology leads to the question is it time to reconsider the role of the aircraft carrier in its current supercarrier state?

“The U.S. Navy and Marines are annoying China” - Sample Version. Full version found in link
“U.S. and Philippines step up multinational exercises in the South China Sea”

The Philippines and China had a couple of incidents near the Second Thomas Shoals in the Spratly Islands which is a disputed region between the two countries.  These two recent incidents between the two nations included the Chinese Coast Guard twice ramming Filipino ships.  The dispute is a smaller part of the larger issue of China illegally claiming most of the South China Sea as its own.  The Chinese claiming of the South China Sea has created disputes with Taiwan, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, and Vietnam, in addition to other territorial disputes with Japan.  The Philippines has a defense treaty with the U.S., so the ramming incidents has the Philippines calling upon the U.S. Navy to increase activity in the region to China’s detriment.
